About the Unit:
The Acute Medicine Unit or AMU is designed to provide rapid and efficient care for patients who present with acute medical problems. These may include conditions such as respiratory infections, exacerbations of chronic diseases (like asthma or COPD), acute cardiac issues, gastrointestinal problems, and various other acute medical conditions.
Upon arrival at the AMU, patients undergo thorough assessment, including medical history, physical examination, diagnostic tests (such as blood tests, imaging studies, and electrocardiograms), and treatment initiation. The goal is to promptly diagnose the underlying condition and initiate appropriate treatment to stabilize the patient's health.
Depending on the severity of their condition, patients may be admitted to the hospital for further management, transferred to a specialty ward for ongoing care, or discharged home with appropriate follow-up arrangements. The AMU team coordinates with other departments and services to ensure continuity of care for patients.
