The role
A permanent Consultant post in Acute Medicine at a well-regarded NHS unit in South Cumbria. The Acute Medicine Unit runs as a Centre of Diagnostic Excellence, with senior decision-makers present throughout the day and a genuine commitment to GIM breadth alongside acute medicine.
The unit covers 20 AMU beds with a fully integrated Medical SDEC, receiving patients directly from primary care, ambulance services and the Emergency Department.
What you will be doing
Managing acute medical admissions with a focus on timely assessment and discharge
Supervising junior doctors and ANPs across AMU and Medical SDEC
Supporting and advising the SDEC team day to day
Teaching undergraduate medical students and junior doctors
Participating in the consultant on-call rota
Contributing to governance, audit and service development
What you will need
Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
Specialist Registration, or within 6 months of CCT or CESR at time of interview
Broad experience in acute medicine and general internal medicine
Ability to supervise junior doctors and medical students
Evidence of audit involvement
Enthusiasm for acute medicine in a diagnostic-focused environment

Job overview
An NHS hospital in South Cumbria is recruiting a Consultant Intensivist to join an established team of eight senior decision-makers at Furness General Hospital. The unit delivers Level 2 intensive care locally, operating a stabilise and transfer model for complex Level 3 patients to the main site at Royal Lancaster Infirmary.
The post is supported by a resident SAS on-call team, a daytime ACCP service, and a Critical Care Outreach service. The unit covers a broad range of general hospital services including a busy Emergency Department, maternity, gynaecology, orthopaedic and trauma theatres, ophthalmology and ENT.
Key responsibilities
Participate in a 1:5 Senior Decision Maker on-call rota including prospective cover
Provide non-resident overnight cover of emergency ITU, supervising a dedicated resident anaesthetist
Lead assessment of deteriorating patients for emergency ITU admission
Manage Level 2 care locally; lead treat and transfer decisions for Level 3 patients
Lead pre and post-operative theatre admission management
Contribute to clinical audit, governance and quality improvement
Supervise junior medical staff and participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
Essential criteria
Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
FICM or equivalent qualification
FRCA or equivalent higher anaesthetic qualification
Specialist Registration, or within 6 months of CCT/CESR at time of interview
Formal ICM training or equivalent experience in intensive care medicine
Experience managing trauma and surgical emergencies
Broad anaesthetic exposure including laparoscopic, emergency surgical and obstetric cases
