The role
A substantive Consultant post in Stroke Medicine at Royal Lancaster Infirmary, part of University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust. This post has received Royal College approval and is open to candidates with a CCT in Geriatric Medicine and GIM, particularly those with sub-specialty experience in stroke medicine.
The unit runs an active acute thrombolysis service, with thrombectomy provided at Royal Preston Hospital and a specialist Telestroke On-Call Service covering out-of-hours and weekends. A combined Acute and Rehabilitation Stroke Unit opened in 2019 and provides the clinical base for this role.
What you will be doing
- Delivering acute stroke care and rehabilitation within the combined Stroke Unit
- Running TIA clinics and outpatient clinics
- Joining the regional Telestroke On-Call rota
- Liaising with Neuroradiology, Neurosurgery, Vascular Surgery and the wider Care of the Elderly team
- Providing clinical leadership to a dedicated multidisciplinary stroke team including ANPs, nurses, therapists and ward managers
- Contributing to teaching and training of medical students and junior doctors
- Participating in audit, governance and service development
What you will need
- Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
- MRCP or equivalent
- CCT in Geriatric Medicine and GIM, or within 6 months of completion at time of interview
- Broad exposure to acute medical diseases and their management
- Ability to supervise junior doctors and medical students
- Sub-specialty experience or training in stroke medicine is desirable but not essential

The unit works in close partnership with Lancaster Medical School, with UHMBT serving as the lead NHS organisation for the full five-year MBChB programme.
The hospitals sit on the edge of the Lake District in an area of outstanding natural beauty, with Liverpool and Manchester both easily accessible by train or car.
