Job overview

An NHS hospital in South Cumbria is recruiting a Consultant Intensivist to join an established team of eight senior decision-makers at Furness General Hospital. The unit delivers Level 2 intensive care locally, operating a stabilise and transfer model for complex Level 3 patients to the main site at Royal Lancaster Infirmary.

The post is supported by a resident SAS on-call team, a daytime ACCP service, and a Critical Care Outreach service. The unit covers a broad range of general hospital services including a busy Emergency Department, maternity, gynaecology, orthopaedic and trauma theatres, ophthalmology and ENT.

Key responsibilities

  • Participate in a 1:5 Senior Decision Maker on-call rota including prospective cover
  • Provide non-resident overnight cover of emergency ITU, supervising a dedicated resident anaesthetist
  • Lead assessment of deteriorating patients for emergency ITU admission
  • Manage Level 2 care locally; lead treat and transfer decisions for Level 3 patients
  • Lead pre and post-operative theatre admission management
  • Contribute to clinical audit, governance and quality improvement
  • Supervise junior medical staff and participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching

Essential criteria

  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • FICM or equivalent qualification
  • FRCA or equivalent higher anaesthetic qualification
  • Specialist Registration, or within 6 months of CCT/CESR at time of interview
  • Formal ICM training or equivalent experience in intensive care medicine
  • Experience managing trauma and surgical emergencies
  • Broad anaesthetic exposure including laparoscopic, emergency surgical and obstetric cases
