So, you’ve received a job offer and you’re ready to start your new NHS position – congratulations! First things first you will need to complete an NHS induction…

Your NHS Induction is a workplace-specific process to ensure new Doctors understand the local practices and policies, both clinical and non-clinical.

Your induction should help you become familiar with your new working environment, and help you to work effectively, so that you can provide excellent care. You may be required to attend two different inductions: a HR induction (or Corporate induction) and a Service induction (or Doctor/Clinical induction).

Your induction/s will generally take place during working hours, but you may be required to complete some online modules at home. You will receive all the information relating to your induction once you have confirmed your exact starting date.

So, what will the induction include?

The key elements of your induction will be likely to include:
  • Physical orientation - maps, getting around etc
  • Organisational orientation - how do I fit into the team?
  • Health and safety (fire safety, manual handling, infection control etc)
  • Information on the organisations’ history, services, culture and values
  • A clear outline of the job and its requirements
  • How structured training will be provided in line with national standards
  • IT and communications arrangements (e.g. use of intranet)
  • Clinical governance, complaints handling and risk management
  • For Doctors new to the NHS: history and structure of the NHS, life and work in the UK etc.
  • Getting cleared to work (Occupational Health & DBS/CRB).
  • Having arrangements made to be paid, go on holiday, details of your working patterns, study leave etc.
